Real racing 2

When you think about the meteoric rise of iOS as a gaming platform over the past couple of years, there are a handful of crucial developers that deserve much of the credit. Firemint is one of them. Besides giving birth to the casual juggernaut that is Flight Control, they also proved that simulation style racing titles could work with Real racing 2. After much hype, anticipation, and frothing, Real Racing 2 is finally here. Oh, happy day!

The original Real Racing-- winner of our 2009 Game of the Year award-- was a watershed moment at the time of its release. While everyone else was struggling to put together a decent-looking game that ran at an acceptable clip, Real Racing was screaming fast and stunning, especially on the then almighty iPhone 3GS. Its racing action had simulation leanings with arcade touches that made the game addictive.

Plants VS Zombies

You would be forgiven for saying you've had your fill of tower defense games. The past couple years has seen a flood of these strategy clones filling casual portals like the iPhone and PC. But you know who might be able to bring you back: the people that brought you Peggle. PopCap, one of the best casual developers and publishers around, presents Plants VS Zombies, its first tower defense game. While it uses the basic mechanics of all efforts in this genre, it's got charm and personality to spare. The result is another addictive experience that will appeal to all walks of gamers.


Zombies are creeping on your lawn, and your garden is your last line of defense against these brain-crazy cannibals. You have some pretty peculiar (but useful) plants at your disposal, including pea shooters that spit green balls at the undead, hot tamales that burn everything in their path, and Venus zombie traps. By planting various seeds in strategic locations around your lawn you may be able to hold off the onslaught and keep them from entering your house and eating your brain.

Leave devil alone

If you are not familiar with the concept of Plants Vs Zombies, it is very simple. You start on the left and plant… plants, or in our case here, weird creatures that attack the zombies arriving from the right, or in our case some sort of guardian-looking dudes. As you go through game levels fighting, surviving, and collecting money, you unlock more and more creatures for your army as well as magic spells that can help sway battles in your favor.

The gameplay was only half of the reason behind original PvZ’s huge success – the other half lay in the excellent humor and crafty cartoonish graphics. Leave Devil Alone doesn’t quite reach that same level of humor or graphics but at least the gameplay does not disappoint. Overall, I am still quite surprised how well it is done.

Cartoon War 2

Medieval-style tower warfare and machine guns: Two great tastes that God never intended to go together, but can mate happily thanks to the magic of the iPhone and the App Store. Cartoon Wars II: Heroes combines the tower defense and real time strategy of the original Cartoon Wars with the running and gunning of Cartoon Wars-Gunner. The two ideas admittedly don't click together as cleanly as Lego blocks, but when you take down your first dragon swarm with an automatic weapon in each hand, you probably won't notice.
Cartoon Wars 2: Heroes tells the story of Captain J, who kicks the ink-colored King K out of his kingdom. King K and his pals search for the ultimate monster, Telos. Presumably, they find him, because the displaced monarch suddenly finds the manpower and resources to launch a full-scale attack on Captain J the usurper. Thus begins several dozen epic battles.

Monopoly

At last count, I think there are around 65,000 versions of Monopoly available, whether as a board or electronic game, including a number of mobile editions. Here & Now: The World Edition for the iPhone changes the usual property names of St. Charles Place and Boardwalk to more exotic fare like Istanbul, Shanghai, and Montreal. The tokens have also changed to things like a windmill, penguin, sumo wrestler, soccer ball, and Easter Island head. Despite the name and token changes, though, this is till the same Monopoly you've played for years.

Fruit Ninja

Unbeknownst to most, ninjas are the sworn enemy of fruit. They have dedicated their lives to snuffing out any and all sources of vitamin C with their lethal blades. Seriously, that's the whole story behind ,Fruit Ninja a wonderful single-minded game from Half Brick.

All you do in this little game is swipe through flying fruit to cleave it in two while avoiding bombs as they, too, arc across the screen. If it sounds shallow, that's because it is. But shallow isn't necessarily a dirty word on the iPhone, especially when you're talking about 99-cent games designed solely for the purpose of wasting a few minutes here and there.

Cut the rope: Holiday Gift

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and if you’re the developer behind Cut the Rope, you’ve had a lot to be jolly about this year. One of the biggest selling and most critically beloved titles of 2010 gets a free holiday makeover to satisfy new players and old fans alike – but is Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift the stocking stuffer you’ve been waiting for, or a quickly rushed lump of coal?

First off, it’s hard to not appreciate the team at Zeptolab and Chillingo for putting out these additional 25 levels for free. The earlier update to Cut the Rope that added 25 new levels and a gravity-flipping gameplay mechanic proved their commitment to ongoing free content, but there’s no questioning that this Christmas edition could have just as easily been included as one of those free updates to the paid version to net themselves some more sales. Offering this as a free standalone product is a commendable move, especially for a top-selling app that doesn’t need to be handing out freebies to draw in the crowd

Angry Birds Seasons

Out with the old, and in with the new. October's gone, but Christmas is right around the corner. Developer Rovio acknowledges this by changing the name of the Angry Birds Halloween to Angry Birds Seasons and adding a new pack of 25 wintry levels to the game. But there's a catch...
When you open the app now, you can choose to play the Halloween levels or the new Christmas-themed ones. Tap the Christmas button, and you're brought to an advent calendar with 25 level slots, one for each day in December through Christmas. The catch is that you can't play through them all immediately. Instead, one new level will be unlocked every day until Santa comes. Note that you do need a Wi-Fi connection to get the new levels.

This is a really cute idea, and a great way to keep you coming back to the game day after day. So far the levels have been fairly tricky, but since you have all day to work on them, you can take your time. Best of all, you don't need to have beaten the previous levels to play the new ones.
This update brings enough to the game that we can now safely consider it a Must Have. If you like Angry Birds (and who doesn't?) you'll be pleased with Angry Birds Seasons.

Cut the rope

Cut the rope has everything you want from an iPhone game: immediate fun, excellent use of the touch screen, and an exuberant personality. The goal is very simple – get a piece of candy into a waiting monster's mouth by slicing through a series of ropes. Like Angry Birds, you must apply basic physics to your game plan, such as cutting certain ropes in a specific order to swing the candy over the monster before snipping the final string.
There are three stars in each puzzle, too, that you need to collect by swinging the candy into them. You can complete a puzzle without capturing all three stars, but doing so not only increases your score, it also helps unlock future levels. The pacing of the stars is so smart. In the first dozen or so stages, collecting all three stars is easy. But then collecting only two is easy. Pretty soon, you feel great just getting one star – but you are so hooked on having all three that you keep playing stages over and over, chasing the thrill of getting a perfect score.

Angry Birds

This game is a funny little puzzler about flightless birds that attack egg-stealing pigs via a slingshot. The pigs hide in wooden, metal, and glass houses. Your power and trajectory determines the success of your birds' attacks. A direct hit at a critical weak point can bring an entire structure down on top of a pig's noggin, resulting in lots of pained oinks. It's very similar to crush the castle, a game I recently reviewed, but Angry Birds outstrips that addictive puzzler in personality.A recent update just added 42 new stages, upgrading Angry Birds from a clever trifle to a substantial game. There are a host of birds you use to attack, such as the basic red cannonballer, a yellow dive-bomber, and little blue birds that split into three when you tap them mid-flight. Deploying the right bird at the right time is the key to finishing stages with a single fling. It's a very simple formula, but thanks to precise controls (you drag your bird back in the slingshot to determine power and throw angle), great puzzle designs, and excellent atmosphere, Angry Birds is outrageously addictive. Depending on how many birds you use to wipe out all pigs in a stage, you earn up to three stars. I found myself replaying stages over and over until I figured out the linchpin of each structure, determined to drop the houses with a single throw. If you sign up for the social network Crystal, you can compare your scores with other players and log your triumphs on leaderboards

Resident Evil 4 Platinum Edition

This is the truest to actual game app I've played, several levels of expertise, and all the bells and whistles of the original game. I can't rate it any higher, but it deserves it.

The new levels are great. Please continue to improve and add new guns.

excellent game...love every facet of the gameplay...story?...not so much..I'd also be inclined to give capcom some more of my cash...would like to play dead rising but..I DONT HAVE A BRAND NEW FRIGGN IPOD!! you guys really smootch booty over this..one star for capcom

N.O.V.A 2: The Hero Rises Again

N.O.V.A 2 is game series made exclusively for Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It is created and developed by Gameloft and is also known as Near Orbit Alliance Vanguard 2: The Hero Rises Again.

The sci-fi action adventure game is set to be released on December 16, 2010. It is the second installment of the critically acclaimed N.O.V.A series. Furthermore, the game’s storyline will be pretty similar to the original series. Humans will still be bound to fight and defeat an evil alien race known as Xenos.

As for the gameplay, N.O.V.A 2 is expected to have new weapons as well as drivable vehicles. It will also feature improved AI and maps that will cater a multiplayer mode that can be played by 10. Moreover, the game will showcase a new single-player campaign.

And according to Rik Henderson, who was lucky enough to get a hands-on of N.O.V.A 2, the game is packed with new enemies which are more intelligent than ever. So be careful with aliens with invisible cloaking abilities that might trick you in the game.

Dungeon Hunter 2

Dungeon Hunter was a hit for Gameloft And where there is a hit, there is almost always a sequel. Gameloft's Dungeon Hunter II follows roughly the same formula as the original: it's an isometric dungeon crawler that sometimes crawls out into the sunlight. Like Diablo, there is much killing and much item-collecting. And a lot of side quests. Like the first Dungeon Hunter, the adventure begins with selecting a hero class. You can be a warrior, rogue, or mage. The warrior, for example, is deadly with a sword while the mage is adept with magic. Once the game begins, you are deep in a dungeon with a companion, desperately cleaving moths and lizard people in hopes of escape. Right away, I bumped into a mini-boss, a hulking lizard with an axe. With several sword slashes and a quick bash attack, the mini-boss was on its back. During those first few minutes, I also was asked to embark on a few side quests (kill 8 moths, etc.).

Dungeon Hunter II is also a pretty attractive little game. There are all new lighting effects for magic attacks. The textures on monsters and dungeons are also improved over the original Dungeon Hunter. Gameloft does not have a date set for Dungeon Hunter II just yet, but while waiting for confirmation of its App Store arrival, check out the very first screens.
